Now and Zen was first conceived in 1989 in the kitchen of Miyoko
Schinner. Recognizing the need for fine Vegan pastries, she began to
bake and deliver them to a handful of natural food stores in the Bay
Area. What began as a tiny operation of love out of her home kitchen
has now grown to a business producing an extensive line of Vegan sweet
and savory products that are now distributed nationwide.
Shortly after her initial advent into the Vegan baking business, Miyoko
was forced to take a hiatus due to the birth of her first child.
However, in 1994, with the support and financial backing of several
committed vegetarians, Now and Zen incorporated and opened a small
restaurant and retail bakery in San Francisco. Now & Zen Vegan Bistro
served elegant and innovative Vegan cuisine, and was heralded by local
and national critics in publications such as Vegetarian Times, San
Francisco Examiner and United Airline's in-flight magazine,
Hemisphere's. It's upscale cuisine attracted a clientele from all over
the world, including celebrities such as Boy George, Olympia Dukakis,
Tracy Chapman and members of the Grateful Dead.
Every Thanksgiving, the restaurant would serve Miyoko's Great UnTurkey,
smothered in golden gravy and accompanied by all the traditional (and
untraditional) fixings. This was acclaimed such a major hit by
customers and locals that in 1997, the Company introduced the UnTurkey™
at a major natural product trade show with resounding success.
Returning to San Francisco with the daunting task of filling $50,000 in
orders, Now and Zen decided focus its energy on the long term growth
potential of Vegan manufacturing. In June of 1997, Now and Zen closed
its restaurant doors.
Soon, a contract with United Airlines for low-fat cookies and cinnamon
rolls came, and thereafter, the Company introduced Hip Whip™, its
revolutionary all natural, non-dairy whipped topping. Although the
Company still distributes the fine line of cakes it made in the
beginning, it has expanded its repertoire to include cookies, meat
alternative products and toppings. In the short manufacturing history,
the Company has incited passion among retailers across the country for
its innovative, exciting products. At Now & Zen, we believe we will
become a leading force in the natural food industry, bringing to the
world ever more creative products that stretch the Vegan imagination.
