Bennett Valley Vineyards - Growers of organic wine grapes in Sonoma
County, California.
Bennett Valley has a long history of grape growing dating back to the
mid 1800's when James Bennett arrived by wagon train and homesteaded
the valley. Many people drawn to Sonoma County by the Bear Flag Revolt
and the gold rush, settled in Bennett Valley in the mid 1800’s. By 1884
Bennett Valley had become a highly productive agricultural area
producing grapes, apples, hay, wheat, oats, barley and all types of
livestock.
Issac DeTurk who has been called “THE pioneer vineyardist and wine
maker in Santa Rosa Valley” started his wine making career at the base
of Bennett Valley with his famed Yulupa Vineyard. In 1862 he had 30
acres planted and in 1867 produced 15,000 gallons at his Belle Mount
Winery - named in honor of Bennett Mountain.
The winery was located just north of where Matanzas Creek Winery now
sits and is easily seen from Bennett Valley Vineyards. By 1878 DeTurk
was producing 100,000 gallons of wine a year at this facility.
By the turn of the century many of the vineyards in Bennett Valley were
destroyed by phylloxera, the rest that survived were destroyed by
prohibition and the land converted to other agricultural uses.
In 1978 Matanzas Creek Winery crushed its first grapes and started the
modern era of grape growing and wine making in Bennett Valley.

100 years ago people in America bought their food from the farmer in

As food corporations swallow smaller companies it becomes quantity
versus quality. The small farm lovingly and carefully tended by the
family farmer is bought out by large conglomerates. These corporations
then purchase products from many different countries and sources.
Labeling is deceptive often leading the consumer to believe they are
buying US and locally.
The politics of labeling has the consumer believing that "natural" is
organic and that "free-range" is happy and healthy animals. The
consumer is often paying more for food, believing that there are less
chemicals, pesticides, hormones and antibiotics in their purchases.

Mornin' Glory - Certified organic prune growers in Northern California.
We are first generation farmers. In 1976 we bought a 25 acre prune
orchard in southern Butte County. This was our start. Today we farm
nearly 200 acres of organic prunes near Live Oak, California. Live Oak
is a small town in the fertile Sacramento Valley, just east of the
picturesque Sutter Buttes, 60 miles north of Sacramento.
We have seven orchards ranging from 78 acres to 6 acres. We also buy
prunes from other growers. All of the prunes we grow or buy are
organically grown, and processed in accordance with the California
Organic Foods Act of 1990. In addition, we are, and always have been,
third party certified.
The variety of prune we grow is French. From these French prunes, we
sell whole prcessed prunes, pitted prunes, natural condition prunes,
and prune juice. The processed prunes are sold under the trademarked
label of Butte Shadow Foods and the prune juice is packed under the
Mornin' Glory label.
Butte Shadow Farms prunes and Mornin' Glory prune juice are distributed
nation wide by the United Natural Foods Wholesale distributors. Our
