The first C-Dory, a 22' X 7'6" "Flat Bottom" was introduced in late

Dyer founded the company. One of the first boats to be built as the 10'

But some things haven't changed:
We do things a little differently at Ebbtide. In the past, most
"quality" boats were "hand-laid". But it's a slow process, and it's
difficult to pump out tens of thousands of boats per day that way.
Those manufacturers who felt the need for these large numbers went away
from "hand-laid" to faster systems such as "chopping".
While a chopper gun is faster, there is also a great chance that the
lay-up will be inconsistent. There is a tendency when "chopping" to put
in more chop, which builds bulk, and less woven or knitted material,
which builds strength. And, because more material is put on at one
time, there also is a tendency to use more resin and less glass --
which creates a more brittle lay-up.
We choose to build fewer boats with more control over the process, but
we are one of a very few boat builders left who fully hand-lay every
boat.
Some may use terms like "hand-laminated" or "hand-rolled" to make it
look like they are "hand-laid", but "the proof is in the pudding." Ask
them if they use chopper guns. If they do, you're not getting a true
"hand-laid" boat.

Emerald Powerboats - Manufacturer of luxury powerboats.
In 1994 Russell Sullivan and a small group of investors created
Frontier Plastics Corporation DBA Emerald Boat Company (The Company).
The new Boat Company’s plan was to develop and build a state of the art
entry-level line of family boats. Aside from the initial investment,
the Company received outside funds from its affiliate, Frontier Pacific
Corporation. Over the next three years, it established dealers and
built their product line. Due to public demand, the dealers began
requesting larger performance oriented boats. In 1997, we had an
opportunity to purchase the Seebold Powerboats line of molds, after
short deliberation we acquired the molds that included models ranging
in size from 19’ to 33’. A new business plan was forged. To give the
Company a boost into the
performance pleasure boat market, we decided to use the strong
reputation of the Seebold powerboat line in the Mid-Western United
States.
The Company began producing the Seebold models and their own 26’
deckboat and retired the smaller entry-level products in late 1997. In
early 1998, with the change and expansion of products, The Company’s
existing management was experiencing difficulties with the
responsibilities of the growing business. By mid 1998, the Company’s
founders decided to restructure management, and in November 1998
appointed Russell Sullivan as President, Brad Collins as General
Manager and James Proctor as Chief Financial Officer. Mr. Collins, an
accomplished boat racer, had recently sold his boat company, Mirage
Boats of Texas, which he founded and successfully operated for 10
years.
The new management team evaluated the strengths and weaknesses of the
Company and its products, determining they had great potential, but had
to be more refined. In this segment of the market, the product has to
be defined – race boat, fishing boat, luxury boat, etc. It was decided
that the Company would build luxury/performance boats and market them
as Emerald Powerboats. The Company’s positioning statement and slogan
became, "Where Luxury Meets Performance".
With the new product definition, the Company altered its business plan.
For 1999, the Company would maintain product awareness in the industry,
and bring its products into focus for the "New Millennium" while
maintaining sales.

When we decide to add a new boat to our line, we start from scratch,
with a blank piece of paper and only a concept in our imagination.
Eventually the concept is captured in a scale drawing, still months
away from becoming a finished new boat.
The manual labor phase begins when the initial wooden jig to form the
skeleton of the plug is slowly assembled by hand. Every step must be
measured precisely. A deviation of a fraction of an inch can
be disastrous when your goal is perfection. Once the basic hull shape
has been formed, it’s skinned with a layer of half-inch marine plywood.
Then the same arduous procedure is repeated to create the
deck. Finally the hull and deck plugs are ready for contour sanding.
Depending on the size and complexity of the styling, hundreds of man-
hours are needed to sculpture the plug into flawless form.
When the plugs are complete, a separate mold of each must be made. To
accomplish that, the plugs are covered, layer by layer, with fiberglass
mat and cloth and soaked with resin. Once cured, the
molds are reinforced with a steel framework and separated from the
plugs. If the process has gone according to plan, the molds will now be
ready with only a minimum of detail work to begin pulling
production hulls and decks.
For the birth of a new Hallett, the entire procedure may take up to a
year or more. But the wait is well worth it as evidenced by our many
industry awards from Powerboat and Hot Boat Magazines for outstanding
new models.

interior space which can fill with water. It has a center trough so any

Rainshadow Marine - Patrick Mahon builds Maine coast lobster boats and
is located in Port Townsend Washington.
At the turn of the century, the boat most commonly used in the lobster
fishery was the sailboat called "sloop boat." Today this sailboat is
known as the Friendship Sloop.
With the advent of reliable gasoline engines in the early 1900's,
engine driven boats brought improvements to the fisherman's daily life
in the way of safety at sea, and greater carrying capacity. The gas
powered boats allowed the fishermen to go further out to sea and to set
more traps than ever before.
The first of these powered boats was simply sail boats modified and
fitted with a single cylinder engine. Soon new boats were being
developed and built for the new engines.
Two distinct styles came into being during the early years of
transition from sail to power. The open "Hampton boat" with its high
bow and wide-curved transom was developed in the Casco Bay area in
Southern Maine, while further North, or "downeast" in the Maine
vernacular, a narrower boat with a torpedo stern was favored.
The boat that now typifies the Lobster Boat style is a result of a
refinement and blending of the two styles that took place during the
1920's and the 1940's. There are still differences to be found among
the boats built today, from region to region, and between the various
builders. Some builders and fishermen favor the "builtdown" type of
hull with its greater volume, while others feel the "skeg built" boat
is lighter and faster, requiring less power. These differences are not
noticeable on boats in the water and the two styles are virtually the
same in all other respects.
All Lobster boats have certain design features in common. The high bow
with its fine entry lets the boat cut through the seas while keeping
the decks dry. The sheer line sweeps low aft to a curved and slightly
raked wide transom. The hull shows considerable tumblehome just aft
midship to the transom. This combination of low freeboard and inward
curving hull sides facilitates the hauling of traps. Underwater the
round bilges provide a smooth motion when under way or when stopped to
haul pots.
The wheelhouse with its large forward windows affords the helmsmen full
visibility, while the open back allows for easy access to the working
deck and fishing gear. Most of the boats actively fished have the
engine placed well forward, sharing space with the crew's
accommodations. The forward cabin was sparingly fitted with a bunk and
simple galley. On cold days and nights the fishermen could warm-up by
going below to have a cup of coffee while sitting close to the open
engine.
The boats used today in the lobster fishery are a result of the
collaboration between designer, builder, and fisherman. The same
features, refined and tested under the harsh and demanding conditions
of commercial fishing, are what make the lobster boat the ideal
pleasure boat. The beauty of its lines and proportion, and its
functional simplicity result in a craft of distinctly traditional
appearance.
The lobster boat is an important part of the New England seascape, in
the same way the Church on the village green, or the brilliant autumn
leaves are part of the New England landscape. It would be hard to
imagine Camden, Belfast or Jonesport Harbors without the woodenslatted
traps waiting on the docks or the Lobster boats riding at their
moorings.
